Toronto's best renovators named for 2007

April 13, 2007

Toronto- Long-time renovation contractor Cohn Construction was named renovator of the year for the second time at the annual renovation and custom building awards ceremony held today by the Greater Toronto Home Builders' Association-Urban Development Institute.

The coveted award goes to the company whose leadership helps raise the standard for all renovators and whose efforts improve the public image of renovators in the Greater Toronto Area. The award reflects how well the renovator performed as a professional, meeting the needs and expectations of customers while contributing to the industry.

In business for over 35 years, Frank Cohn has taken an active role in GTHBA-UDI and the provincial home builders' association. He is a frequent volunteer for seminars, home shows and other industry events and is best known for his involvement with the Home Improvement Show on radio station CFRB.

An independent survey of clients for all renovator of the year finalists was a key component of the judging process. Testimonials highlighted the commitment Cohn Construction makes to meeting expectations. Client remarks ranged from "came through on everything they said they would do," to "we liked his practical suggestions." Without exception every client commented they would use the company again.

In other categories MyHaven Homes Ltd.  garnered the award for best renovation over $300,000 for an update to a semi-detached 19th century Victorian home in Yorkville.  The existing front façade was preserved in keeping with heritage board requirements while most of the existing home on two levels was updated to increase square footage and modernize the home.

Best renovation $75,000 - $150,000 was awarded to Carick Home Improvements for an urban lifestyle renovation of a loft in downtown Toronto. An open area was converted into a large master bedroom with laundry facilities, an existing bedroom was revamped and a front hall closet was added with a mezzanine on top for additional storage space.

A kitchen addition and renovation in North York earned Homes Etc… the award for best renovation under $75,000. The new kitchen and deck structure was created to create a more functional space for entertaining. It includes the addition of heated floors, remote control skylights and a spectacular view of the existing gardens.

Woodcastle Construction Ltd. took the award for best custom home with a French country home in Mississauga. This four bedroom home was built on an awkward ravine lot with tight coverage conditions. The home includes a great room featuring 23' high ceilings, two storey front foyer and screened in porch and deck.

The home renovation and custom building awards are sponsored by Renovation and Décor magazine.
