Essential construction during enhanced restrictions
April 17, 2021
Today, the Government of Ontario released updated regulations outlining what residential construction activities, projects and related services are considered essential and permitted to continue under the enhanced COVID-19 restrictions that were announced yesterday. See yesterday's news release.
Excerpts from Section 6 of the updated regulations specify that the following essential construction activities may continue:
43. Construction activities or projects and related services, including land surveying and demolition services, that,
(i) are residential construction activities or projects and related services;
BILD has clarified that this includes renovation work.
(j) prepare a site for an institutional, commercial, industrial or residential development, including any necessary excavation, grading, roads or utilities infrastructure;
(k) are necessary to temporarily close construction sites that have paused, or that are not active, to ensure ongoing public safety;
BILD has also clarified that sales centres remain open by appointment only.
We remind members that our industry’s ability to be designated as an essential workplace hinges on our strict adherence to provincial requirements. Yesterday, the Ontario government began targeted provincewide inspections of construction sites. Workplace inspectors, supported by provincial offenses officers, will visit 1,300 construction sites in the coming weeks to enforce safety requirements.
We strongly urge all BILD member companies to revisit their COVID-19 protocols and take all necessary steps to protect workers, clients and members of the public. As a reminder, the Ontario government website has guidance for construction site health and safety. In addition, ensure that any office spaces are also compliant with public health and workplace safety measures.
